| Application Tips for credit cards | |
| 1. | Know your credit score. |
Unless you know your credit rating, you will waste your time applying for credit cards for which you're not qualified. Every credit card issuer has a target credit rating, or group of people they want to offer cards to. Some issuers want only people with perfect credit. Others have more relaxed credit criteria and will approve people with past credit problems. You can limit the number of applications you fill out and increase your approval rate by obtaining your credit score and applying for the cards that fit your profile. |
|
| 2. | Don't apply more than once every 60 days to the same credit card company. |
This is one of the biggest reasons people are declined by credit card companies. Most companies will automatically decline your application if you apply a second time within 60 days from your first application to that issuer. Because companies sometimes use different brand names for their various cards, it's not always easy to know that you're applying to the same issuer. If you're not sure, check the terms and conditions listed with each card. Credit card companies are required to disclose the issuer in these documents. |
|
| 3. | Past credit problems will increase your intrest rates and fees. |
Credit cards use the same "risk-based" pricing concept that is commonly used by auto and mortgage lenders. This means that the people with the best credit (the lowest risk customers) get the lowest rates and fees. In order for banks to lend money to customers with bad credit, they must be rewarded with higher interest rates or fees. So if you know your credit history has some problems, don't be surprised when the card issuer offers you a high interest rate or some up-front fees. This may be the only way for you to get a credit card until your credit score improves. If you've had serious delinquencies or a bankruptcy, it can take up to seven years to be cleared from your record. |
|
| 4. | Credit Bureau reporting. |
If you're trying to rebuild your credit, because of past problems, make sure you get a card that reports your payments to all three credit bureaus (Experian, Trans Union, and Equifax). If these payments aren't sent to the bureaus, other lenders won't know about them, and your credit score won't improve. Check the terms and conditions of each card you apply for. If it's not clear whether the card issuer reports your payments to the credit bureaus, contact the issuer for more information. |
